What can be yours

What Udyam registration gives a business

Most of these depend on the scheme, the lender or the buyer. Registration is what makes you eligible.

  • Protection against late payment

Buyers must pay micro and small enterprises within 45 days, with interest on delay and a council to take disputes to.

  • Easier credit

Access to priority sector lending and collateral-free loans under the credit guarantee scheme.

  • Government tenders

Exemption from earnest money deposits, and a share of public procurement kept for small enterprises.

  • Lower IP fees

Reduced government fees on trademark and patent applications for small enterprises.

  • Subsidies and schemes

Eligibility for central and state schemes on technology, certification and marketing.

  • One permanent number

A single Udyam number for the business, with no renewal.

Udyam registration does not create a company or a firm. It classifies a business that already exists. If you have not set one up, start with company registration.

Before you decide

MSME registration, answered

What is MSME or Udyam registration?

It is the government registration that classifies a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise under the MSME Development Act, 2006. It is done online on the Udyam portal and gives the business a permanent Udyam Registration Number.

Who can register as an MSME?

Any business in manufacturing, services or trading whose investment and turnover are within the limits: a proprietorship, a partnership, an LLP, a company or another form of enterprise.

What are the current MSME limits?

From 1 April 2025: micro is up to ₹2.5 crore of investment and ₹10 crore of turnover, small is up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, and medium is up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.

Is Udyam registration free?

Yes. The government charges no fee. A professional fee applies only if you ask a firm to file it for you.

Does Udyam registration need to be renewed?

No. The number is permanent. The business must keep its details up to date, and its class can change as its investment and turnover change.

Is Udyam the same as Udyog Aadhaar?

Udyam replaced Udyog Aadhaar in July 2020. A business that held the older registration needed to move to Udyam for it to remain valid.

Is Udyam registration compulsory?

No. It is voluntary. Without it, a business cannot claim the benefits the law and the schemes give to MSMEs.

Do MSMEs pay less for trademarks?

Yes. Small enterprises pay a reduced government fee on a trademark application, the same as individuals and startups. You need the Udyam certificate when you file.
