Is it yours to register?

Who needs GST registration

Turnover is the usual trigger, but some businesses must register from the first sale.

  • Turnover above the threshold

Total sales across India under one PAN cross the limit for goods or for services.

  • Sales of goods to other states

A business supplying goods across state borders registers whatever its turnover.

  • Selling through e-commerce

Marketplace operators must register, and so must most businesses that sell through them.

  • Casual taxable persons

Someone who supplies occasionally in a state where they have no fixed place of business.

  • Non-resident suppliers

A business outside India that makes taxable supplies here.

  • Voluntary registration

A business below the threshold can register by choice, to claim input tax credit and supply to registered buyers.

Thresholds are lower in some north-eastern and hill states, and the rules change by notification. We check your position against the current rules before you file.

How the number becomes yours

How GST registration works

Five stages on the GST portal, and what happens after the number is issued.

  1. 01 Check

    Do you need to register?

We look at your turnover, what you sell and where, and confirm whether registration is required or worth taking voluntarily.

  2. 02 Application

    Part A and Part B

The PAN, mobile number and email are verified first. The business details and documents follow in the main application.

  3. 03 Verification

    Aadhaar and the officer

The applicants authenticate with Aadhaar, and the tax officer reviews the application. We answer any query raised.

  4. 04 GSTIN

    The registration certificate

The GSTIN and the certificate are issued. From here you charge GST on your invoices.

  5. 05 Returns

    Filing, period after period

Returns are due even in a period with no sales. We prepare and file them with you.

After registration

The GST returns a regular taxpayer files

Before you decide

GST registration, answered

What is GST registration?

It is the process of enrolling a business under the Goods and Services Tax law. The business receives a 15-character GSTIN, which lets it collect GST on sales and claim credit for the GST paid on its purchases.

Who needs GST registration?

A business whose yearly turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in most states. Some must register whatever their turnover, including those supplying goods to other states, casual taxable persons and non-resident suppliers.

Is GST mandatory for every business?

No. A business below the threshold that falls in none of the compulsory categories does not have to register. It can still register voluntarily, which helps when customers want GST invoices.

What documents are required?

PAN, identity proof and a photograph of the owners, proof of the business, proof of the business address, and bank details.

How long does GST registration take?

It depends on the verification. An application with Aadhaar authentication and complete documents moves fastest. One that is selected for physical verification, or that draws a query, takes longer.

What is the composition scheme?

It is an option for small taxpayers to pay GST at a flat rate on turnover and file fewer returns. A business under the scheme cannot charge GST on its invoices or claim input tax credit.

Do you handle filing too?

Yes. Define IPR Solutions provides registration and filing support together, and helps with amendments to an existing registration.

How much does GST registration cost?

The government charges no fee for the registration itself. Our professional fee depends on the type of business and whether you want return filing included. We quote it after a free consultation.
